Auld Lang Syne

Auld Lang Syne
Robert Burns

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne

We twa hae run aboot the braes
And pou'd the gowans fine;
we've wander'd mony a weary foot
Sin' auld lang syne

We two hae paidled i' the burn,
Frae mornin' sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin' auld lang syne

And here's a hand, my trusty friend,
And gie's a hand o' thine;
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne

Holiday Safety Tips

As 2010 wraps up, we are reminded of how Thankful we are for being part of the Savannah Business community and able to protect our clients, their assets and the people of Savannah.  We held a Holiday Cocktail Reception on December 9 at The First City Club in Savannah for our clients (View Photos here). The event was a great way to kick off the holiday season and to say Thank you to our clients for their endearing support throughout 2010.  An incredible time, we definitely did not loose site of holiday partying and the dangers that holiday party can sometime bring.

Celebrating with family and friends can be enjoyable and dangerous. Just a few holiday safety tips to keep you and your family cheering in a safe environment.

1. Assign a designated driver when going out to your holiday party. Have fun, but be safe.
2. Work with local cab companies to see if they are supporting your designated party area, chances are, they are  servicing the area.
3. Eat before you start drinking. Be responsible. Limit the number of drinks you consume.
4. Drink with friends and family. Be careful and watch your drink at all times. Never leave your drink unattended.
5. Never get behind the wheel after consuming a large amount of alcohol. Party with family and friends.

Remember, we want you to have fun, but be responsible about the type of fun you want to have.  Saber wants everyone to get home safely.

Event Security For Your Holiday Party

It's that time of year again!  Everyone is having their holiday party starting early in December. Venues are quickly being scheduled, caterers hired and event security?  Although this is a time of cheers and joys, but this is also the time when even the smallest threats can have a serious impact on your fun.  Don't be caught by surprised!

Alcohol is the number one causes of car accidents, fights and destructive behavior during this time of the year.  We all want to be involved in the cheers, but not at the cost of someone's health and well-being.  The thieves are out lingering too.  Watching your complex, staking your events, just ready to take advantage of your vulnerable times and situations.  Be proactive this holiday season.  Saber provides armed and unarmed security officers.  We prefer to have our security officers be deterrents to possible criminal activities, but our officers are highly trained in pursuit of suspects, tactical evasions and firearms training.  We work closely with law enforcement as a first line of defense against any possible threats during the holiday season and beyond.  Remember, we want you to have fun, but not at the expense of you or your employees of health and well being.

Consider seasonal protective services to keep your mind at ease this holiday season.  Never give into the criminals that are laying in wait for you to keep your guard down.  Remember, proactive is always better than reactive, but always be prepared.

Have a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

Stay Safe!

Training Equates To Prevention Instead Of Reaction

Preventive measures versus Reactive measures.  Saber provides our security officers with Georgia State mandated Basic 24 hour Security Guard training to ensure our clients that our security officers are prepared to handle any situation that may involve possible physical confrontation.  We held a recent training session for our security officers in tactical and defensive maneuvers.  Additionally, our armed security officers was provided with refresher gun range evaluation and training.  Our training was delivered by a Georgia State certified instructor with emphasis on safety and proper usage of a firearm.  Saber security officers are well educated in all levels of proper use of force placing focus on preventive steps (security presence, routine patrols, reporting and more) while understanding that reactive procedures (verbal commands and defensive approach) may be necessary but only if imminent threats are present.

We pride ourselves in providing our customers with well-trained security officers that are prepared to handle any situation that may arise.  Please visit our website for more information.

Halloween Safety Tips

The film industry has captivated audiences with Twilight, Avatar and soon to be released, Harry Potter. The costumes this year will be outrageous and fun. However, we must remember to have fun while staying safe. Saber has posted great Halloween Safety tips for trick-o-treaters, costumers and the party-goers. As Halloween approaches, fun and parties are sure to be at the forefront. However, caution should also be important so that everyone can have fun and party in safety! Here are some Halloween safety tips for trick-o-treating, costumers and partying times.

Trick-o-Treaters
1. For the youngsters, have two bags. One for your neighborhood, the people you know and one for when you go outside your neighborhood/strangers.
2. Do not eat treats until adult has carefully examined all the candy thoroughly.
3. Stay away from dark and low-lighted areas, be sure to stay on well-lite sidewalks.
4. Stay away from houses that do not have their porch light on which indicates they are not anticipating in Halloween.
5. Many of the ministries around town offer their own Halloween costume party. Visit local churches, malls, downtown businesses for trick-o-treating. Sometimes, they even have special Halloween candy, gifts or promotions that benefit all in a safe manner.

Costumers
1. Check the labels on the costume to ensure they are fire-retardant.
2. Be sure your costume is comfortable and it is not restricting your movement, circulation and breathing.
3. Wear a homemade face rather than a mask. If you are wearing a mask, be sure it does not block your vision. Read the labels on mask. Some mask have paint that may contain lead which can be inhaled while wearing it.
4. If your costume has a tail or anything hanging, be careful when you walk so you don't trip. Especially with kids, if they're riding their bikes, the tail could get caught in the wheel.
5. Be aware of draw strings. It can get caught around your neck. For kids, this can cause choking.
6. Wear reflective tapes on your costumes so that when you are trick-o-treating, passer-bys will be able to see you in the dark.

Party Goers
1. Safety in groups - go out with friends, coworkers, neighbors, it's always safer in groups.
2. Decide on a designated driver or work out an arrangement with local cab companies that you have used before. They want to provide the city with quality service and get everyone to their destinations safely.
3. Let people know where you are going to be and what time you are expected back. No, you're not a teenager, but a responsible adult. Just in case something happens, people want to be able to have accurate accounts to ensure your safety.
4. Eat FOOD to offset the alcohol
5. Sign up for e-alerts at Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department (Twitter Facebook, Blog)

Halloween can be great fun. Dressing up in costumes, trick-o-treating, costume contests, parties, the whole nine yards, but your fun can rudely be interrupted with dangerous distractions. Be careful. Use the tips to help you make sound decisions during this Halloween.

Remember, on October 31, 2010, Stay Safe!

Saber's Back-to-School Safety Tip #2 - Technology

In this new technology age, we have to be creative when protecting our kids because the criminals are being creative. Our back-to-school safety tip #2 is Technology, including mobile devices and applications, social media and Online sites that prey on kids.

Personal Information Online
Definitely talk to your kids/teenagers on what type of information they should NOT be sharing on the Internet whether it is on Facebook, My Space, etc. You wouldn't give your address and phone number out to a stranger, right? Well, same strokes, different folks. Explain to your kids that they should only be associated with kids at their schools, neighborhoods or family that you gave them permission. DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT give out personal information online anywhere in your profile. You must be diligent about this and the good habits now will be good habits later.

Mobility
Most high schoolers have cell phones today. There are two different types of mobile warning parents/teachers/adults should look for. Sexting. In the forefront of the media these days and could be very dangerous. Never take a photo of yourself (whether it is naked/nude or with clothing) and send it to a friend. Photos can be altered and the consequences can be severe.

For teenagers, no driving and texting. Georgia just passed this law and many programs around the country really promotes this type of distraction. It should not just be texting, but other distractions as well. No putting on make-up, no fidgeting with the radio, no goofing around with friends in the car while you are driving. You have the responsibility for your driving, the passengers and others on the road.

Social Media
Recently in Atlanta, a high school student was arrested at school for posting on Facebook that he would be hurt two other students with a gun. Parents got whiff of this and called the police right away. The police came to the school and arrested the student. That student may be tried as an adult because of his threats. Social Media applications like Facebook and Twitter have revolutionized the way we communicate, but remember law enforcement agencies around the world are also using this tool and they take all threats seriously.

Interesting enough, there are many colleges that are looking at your social media pages and blogs to learn more about you. So, for those students who are applying to colleges, remember, schools are using social media too and when admissions officers are brought to the attention of your social media pages to include blogs, it can make a difference. Yes, there is the first amendment right, but colleges and universities also have the right to accept or deny a student because of his or her language on social media pages to include blogs. Students work too hard to get good grades, score well on standardize tests to only be denied because of what you might think is harmless fun on your Facebook.

Online Sites
Parents, you must monitor your kids behavior at home as to what sites they are visiting. For instant, hackers were targeting Justin Bieber so that when people would visit his YouTube page, there would be "tasteless messages pop up" and links appear to direct them to adult sites. Justin Bieber is a teenage magnet and this can be harmful. You can install software on your computers like McAfee or Symantec to detect these types of threats no matter what pages your kids are going to. You can have the software automatically report these intrusions through emailing you, their admin or close the browser down and store the information.

But, what is the key? Communication. Discuss behavior on the Internet, on mobile phones, social media pages with your kids. Make it a family event. Let your kids know that you are only looking out for their best interest. Have some examples from local news ready to discuss to back up your concerns. Good behavior now yields good behavior later in life.

Stay Safe!

Saber's Back-to-School Safety Tip #1 - Transportation

Over the Summer, we held our inaugural Kids Safety Event. It was a tremendous success. Getting involved and giving back to our community is important to keeping everyone safe and thriving. Now that Summer is almost to an end, most schools in the Savannah-Chatham area are back in session or starting soon. Regardless, Saber wants to provide a few safety tips for you and your kids.

However your kids are getting to school (bus, car, walking, biking, skateboarding, etc.), know the route they get to school. Between home and school, no matter who your kids get there is a high probability of kids getting lost which can put them in danger? Our first weekly safety tip will be about transporting kids to and from school and the sometimes distractions can lead to harm.

Transportation Tips

1. If you are driving them or carpooling, please don't leave until you see them safely walk in the building or at least on school grounds.

2. Walking? Plan the route and walk it with your kids. If there are any vacant lots, abandon buildings and anything that may feel enticing to your kids, be adamant about telling them to stay away from those areas.

3. Riding bikes, skateboarding or even riding the bus, it's important for kids to obey the traffic and school signs, cross guard officers and just be aware of their surroundings. Stay with siblings, neighbors or schools officials in the neighborhood and on school property. Report anything they feel uncomfortable about including people, other kids (bullying) and flagrant drivers.

- If riding a bike or skateboard, helmets are required in the state of Georgia. Following the law is being a good citizen, but also being responsible. Preventing any bodily harm is good practice.

- If riding the bus, have your kids arrive to the bus stop early. Stay seated and follow the rules on the bus. Tell your kids to never walk in front of the bus or bend down and tie their shoes. The bus driver may not see them when s/he pulls off. Work with your neighbors to work in shifts/days to act as a safety monitor. More eyes is better than one and communicating with the bus driver to help clear the way, is also helpful!

4. A most important tip is to STAY AWAY FROM STRANGERS! Discuss who are the community leaders (principal, teachers, counselors, neighbors, police officers, fire department officers, and more) and to go to them if they feel uncomfortable about anyone or situations.

5. Have your kids stick with people they know. They're siblings, neighbors, and friends. Safety in numbers is always good.

6. Does your kids know their address and phone number? What about any emergency contacts? In today's society, your kids probably have a cell phone. Make sure they have quick access to their emergency contacts on their phone or have them memorized.

7. And speaking of cell phones, kids are quick to text their friends about new music, gossip, etc. Why not a quick text while on the bus "Mom, got 2 school safe." or "Dad, just got home ttyl." If we practice good habits for texting, it won't get such a bad rap in the media.

8. Maybe at the first PTSA meeting, raise any security concerns about transportation to and from school. Discuss them as a community and find solutions together. 200 heads are better than one.

9. Remind them of NOT talking to strangers. Have a password or phrase ready in case someone tells your child they you told them to pick them up or meet them somewhere. These are safety measures you really should discuss with your kids on a regular basis. No matter how old they are. Teenagers are just as vulnerable.

10. Our last but never least tip, communication. Communicate with your kids, your neighbors, teachers, school officials and always keep that line of communication open. Remember, your kids are the most precious gifts you have.

We hope our 10 Transportation safety tips will help you. Saber prides itself on helping our community through safety education. The next few weeks, we will provide more Back-to-School safety tips, because yes, if the criminals are being creative, we have to at least know what their creativity will bring.

Summer Safety for Kids

Tuesday, July 13, 2010, Saber held its inaugural Kids Safety Event at Ellis Square downtown Savannah, Georgia. The purpose of the event was to pass along safety tips to kids on summer safety, Internet/online safety, community helpers and reminding the kids of potential Stranger Dangers! Summer safety, presented by Saber's principal consultant, Bernard S. Robinson of Robinson Security Consultancy, focused on keeping cool by wearing light weight clothing and drinking plenty of water. Bernard also expressed that when kids see a stranger, they should yell "FIRE" because people are used hearing kids scream when they play and they may not respond right away. Overall, the kids were very receptive to Bernard and took away valuable lessons of summer safety.

Savannah Child Shield USA, Steve Sherman and Tim Holden, presented the Stranger Danger theme but educated the kids more on being aware of their surroundings and how to really tell who is a stranger. "If you feel uncomfortable about anyone, you should always listen to your gut," Steve Sherman suggested. More education is really the key to keeping kids safe for both kids and their parents. Beau Varnadoe of The Pegasus Group talked about community helpers. Kids are at school, playground, outside playing most of the time so identifying other community helpers is key to accessing help. Community helpers like police officers, teachers, counselors, neighbors can be an alternative to parents who may not be around and can help the kids immediately so there are great safe alternatives.

The event was not only about safety, but we did want to make it fun for the kids. We had face painting, arts and crafts and of course the beautiful fountains to cool everyone off. We all had a great time!

Spring Forward in Safety

With Spring officially here, Ellis Square open and in full swing, everyone is getting relaxed and enjoying the weather.  But for Security, this is no time to be relaxed.  Because of the increased crowds at parks and large events, criminals are scoping and planning their next attack.  Awareness plays a huge role in prevention and monitoring. Certainly, having fun means in a safe environment, but being alert and paying attention to what is going on around you truly is effective and can deter a lot of potential theft and even more brazen acts.  Crime prevention is much better than calling in law enforcement to handle criminal activities.

Working with your local business community or starting a crime prevention group in your neighborhood can be very effective.  While out in public areas like parks, keep a watchful eye of young children and perhaps travel in groups rather than alone.  Most criminal elements will target people who appear to be alone or confused of their location.  With Ellis Square just opening, there will be a lot of visitors local and out-of-towners who will have questions. Saber Security officers are on board to help answer questions, but most importantly, provide a secure presence and deterrence for possible violent acts.

Conclusively, crime prevention is the goal.  Be aware of your surroundings, travel in groups, let your family and friends know where you are and know where local law enforcement or security officers are stationed for more secure environment.  Having fun should not be at the cost of your life!

Stay Safe!

Special Events And Your Security

When the Canadians and the USA hockey teams were matched at the Olympics, there was so much hype and anxiety about the crowd, local police asked liquor stores in the centers to shut down early.  The purpose was to prevent emotions flaring extremely high which tends to happen when alcohol is involved. With the also heightened security awareness post 9/11, security is no longer an option but a necessity especially during special events as such with the 2010 Winter Olympics.  Savannah will be faced with similar security threats during 2010 St. Patrick's Day celebration.

As Savannah boasts the second large St. Patrick's Day celebration in the country, the crowds are large and boisterous, but party goers seem to be more aware than ever before.  Local law enforcement and security agencies become visible and are ready to calm situations in the event uncontrollable individuals want to showboat.  Savannah is well prepared as usual to support the festivities while not hindering any of your fun.  Security threats are always a concern and many man-hours have been executed in planning to ensure the safety of everyone.  And although alcohol can contribute to the unruly participants, it is nonetheless, a situation that is always part of situational awareness and trained police and security officers are prepared to de-escalate any situation.

So while everyone is enjoying the St. Patrick's Day festivities in Savannah this year, please remember to be aware of your surroundings, travel in groups, designate a responsible person to drive or just be alert, but most importantly, have SAFE FUN!  We all want to enjoy, but not at the risk of your life.

Small Business Strategic Need for Security Services

In past years, security officers have long been seen as inadequate rental cops that offer no particular service or lack the respect for protecting your assets.  However, with the heightened awareness of security threats not just in government buildings and large transportation depots, the need for security is at the forefront of the news and every major law enforcement agency in the country.  To bring security back to small communities is what really drive small business owners to re-evaluate their operations.  There are several reasons that many small business owners require more security presence with contracted security officers to protect, detect, react and resolve many potential conflicts.

Taking a proactive approach to protecting and securing your assets is not only smart, but strategic in the sense that it saves the business money in the long run and prevents inventory loss in most immediate revenue accountability.  As protection becomes more of a need, trained security officers are more apt to detect anomalies from normal operations; a necessary attribute to have especially when you have critical products and services that are vital to your revenue stream. Trained security officers have specific education in how to restrain potential suspects. A critical component when business owners choose to prosecute suspects in retail theft internal or external.  The most important element of having security officers present is to offer a safe environment for your customers.  Security officers provide specialized execution in conflict resolution through communication and approach.  Communication and respectful approach resolves situations before they become elevated.

Many small business owners do not budget or cannot afford security services as part of their operations financial plan. A more in depth analysis should research the cost benefits more closely in security services.  Security service is definitely a strategic design to a more efficient business operation.

Training Prevents Mistakes And Attacks Threats

Operations, processes and communications is continuing to be a problem in security especially when there are security threats and vulnerabilities that have successfully interrupted business operations such as terrorist threats in airline traffic.  What is most prominent in the problems identifying security threats is back to basics; training.  Technological advancements, innovative infiltration of assets and more has provoked more and more emphasis on basic security training in various areas.

Keep security officers aware of technology advancements can assist in situational awareness in business communities, event coverage, public and private facilities, and more.  Cell phones with new mobile applications that can be developed to act as a remote trigger for many home made bombs is a serious and true threat by terrorist groups that want to disrupt events or public areas.  Impostors that want to gain access to secure facilities to cause major intrusions in computer systems must be identified through thorough security checks to prevent these types of security interruptions. Even the lack of communication on small problems that may not be considered high level threats could lead to possible bigger security threats because it is a planned diversion.

All these scenarios can surely be prevented through diligent training in basic security education. Being aware of your surrounding, your client's company policies in access and security procedures as well as reaction training can help facilitate security officers procedures into effective responses.  No matter how minute a problem may appear, if security officers are following standard operating procedures, a problem can be identified immediately because it is out of the ordinary of the daily routine. These types of training is not and should never be a one time training course. Because of the aggressive nature of security threats to not only government organizations and facilities, the private sector is just as vulnerable and can pose more destructive to those criminal elements to government entities. Continuous training that adapts to the changes in technological advancement, communication with key personnel of your client staff and following client guidelines and policies can ensure preventive attacks are in place so that the response is legally direct and cautiously swift.  Protecting your assets requires a strong defense and progressive training.

How Contract Security Can Calm The Emotions of Civil Unrest

Unemployment, natural disasters, terrorists threats can produce very destructive emotions and cause civil unrest in the work place, major transportation hubs (airport, train stations, etc.), and in the community during events or even natural disasters. The presence of security alone brings order to a chaotic environment. Having checkpoints in place provides organization and a sense a calm in times of disorder. Lately in the news, we hear of of violence in the workplace due to employers going through a reduction in workforce.  Emotions are heightened and companies must go through the event in protecting those innocent current and former employees as well as other companies if residing in a multi-use building.  Saber Security Officers are trained in providing security support during particular times and understand the sensitivity of what may transpire and are ready to react appropriately to delegate immediate response while maintaining stability.

With the recent storms and earthquakes that have hit various regions in the world, emergency response services are usually tied up with more pressing matters and could always use help in securing perimeter area while law enforcement agencies are needed in protecting more vital area such as hospitals and addressing unruly subjects.  Saber's security officers is always ready to assist in these trying times and provide that extra needed support where regular emergency response agencies are often strained in resources. Additionally, security offers a sense or order when people are unsure of what is supposed to do. A go to point can also allow emergency response agencies to inform one location to disseminate information to a central location when there is always a possibility of misinformation especially when it has to pass through many channels.

Security support is necessary in these times when resources from federal, state and local agencies are strained and need to focus on critical directives of their areas.  Stability and calmness is precipitated when the environment's temperament is calming and organized. Remember that securing your assets in unruly times can mean whether you rebuild or close shop all together. Security is no longer an option, but a necessity to maintain structure in unsuspecting events.

Stormy Mix In Security Operations

The first full week of 2010 has been a rough one as far as weather is concerned. The entire country has been tackling a major winter storm which was challenging for the southeast region.  But, with all the wintry challenges, companies’ operations and staffing has been dangerously interrupted.  When you have this type of disruption, vulnerabilities become more prominent and must be addressed immediately before any threats are presented.

As many businesses overlook operational threats, in these times when threats become real very quickly, businesses must have backup and recovery procedures in place, rehearsed periodically so that if the need arise, execution can be smooth and without loss of assets.  With the many ice storms that hit the southeast, it can affect deliveries/transportation, power lines (electrical outages) that can knock out computer and security systems and even reduce staff to bare minimum leaving an opening for many threats.  If you don’t have a backup/recovery plan in place, threats can be real-time intrusions that can not only intrude in your daily operations, but increase your asset loss.

Although Saber provides many of our customers with protective services through security officers, we have found that having immediate operational backup through available professional staffing can have such a strong effect in asset security; asset, not just in business intelligence, but operational reliance. 2010 will pose many challenges, but Saber is always prepared to work with clients to ensure their assets are protected.
